This, for the most part, was my gear list for the Te Araroa. I couldn’t have gone to New Zealand without a bunch of camera gear, but if I ever attempted a thru-hike again I would never bring this much. Every day you hike from the moment you wake and eat until the moment you eat and go to bed. Do not carry anything other than the bare essentials. I am sure that the weight of my pack, even though I was in shape, contributed to the knee injury that largely influenced my decision to leave the trail.
